Prof. Svetlana Derkach, born January 31, 1959, in Russia, is a distinguished chemist and academic leader. She holds advanced degrees from prestigious institutions, including a PhD from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and a Dr. Sci. from the Academy of Fine Chemical Technology, Moscow. With a career spanning several decades at Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU), she has held roles from Associate Professor to Rector. Currently, she is a Professor in the Chemistry Department and Principal Researcher of the Laboratory “Chemistry and Technology of Marine Bioresources” at MSTU. Her research interests include structural and colloid chemistry, marine resources, and bioproducts.

Prof. Svetlana Derkach’s educational journey began in 1983 when she graduated from Leningrad Technological Institute (now Saint Petersburg State Technological Institute) with a degree as a Chemist-Technologist-Engineer. She went on to earn her PhD from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1991. In 1995, she completed British Language Courses in Great Britain, further enhancing her international perspective. In 2002, Prof. Derkach earned her Dr. Sci. degree from the Academy of Fine Chemical Technology in Moscow, and in 2003, she was awarded the title of Professor by the Ministry of Science and Education of Russia. To expand her leadership and administrative skills, she completed a professional program in State and Municipal Management from Omsk State University in 2020, followed by additional programs in Management in Education and Project Management in 2021 at the National Academy of Additional Professional Education and the Institute of Professional Education, respectively.

Professional Experience

Prof. Svetlana Derkach has had an illustrious career at Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU). She began as an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department from 1995 to 2001, before being promoted to full Professor, a position she held from 2001 to 2008. She then advanced to Vice-Rector for Research and Development (2008-2014), demonstrating her leadership capabilities. From 2014 to 2019, she served as Head of the Chemistry Department and subsequently took on the role of Rector of MSTU from 2019 to 2022. Since 2022, Prof. Derkach has continued her academic and research work as a Professor in the Chemistry Department and Principal Researcher of the Laboratory “Chemistry and Technology of Marine Bioresources” at MSTU, focusing on the intersection of chemistry and marine resource technology.

Prof. Svetlana Derkach’s research interests encompass a broad spectrum of chemistry. In Structural Chemistry, she explores liquid surfaces, films, and nanoparticles, focusing on macromolecular assemblies within biopolymer systems, including biopolymer solutions and interfacial layers, as well as the development and application of nanocomposites. Her work in Colloid Chemistry addresses the stability and rheology of dispersed systems, including protein-polysaccharide interactions, surfactants, emulsions, gels, and polymer solutions. Additionally, she applies her expertise to marine resources, investigating bioproducts from the Northern seas and their applications in the food industry. Her research integrates fundamental chemistry with practical applications, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and industrial innovation.
